The Board of Trustees

Butter Side Up Theatre Company was founded by Becky Cleary, Michael Hudson and Lucy Smith-Jones.  


Often taking on roles within the committee to attend to day to day matters, the three founding trustees also maintain teir ownership of the company and oversee major programming decisions.

Becky Cleary

Becky has a first class Masters degree in Digital Marketing from Salford University and a 2:1 degree in BA (Hons) Business Studies from Sheffield Hallam University.


She has been involved in amateur dramatics since the age of 8. She was involved with Playbox Theatre Company in Warwick, went to Sylvia Young Theatre School in London for a year, and more recently been a member of HSU Theatre Society in Sheffield. She has had experience in directing, producing, backstage, tech, performing and been on two amateur dramatic committee’s; HSU Theatre as the Marketing Manager and now Butter Side Up Theatre as Chair.


Becky currently works as a Marketing Manager at a radio communications company. Other work experience includes working as a Media Assistant at a global advertising agency, Sponsorship & Promotion Executive at a local radio station and a Marketing Account Manager at another marketing agency.

Michael Hudson

Michael has been a performer since the age of 5. Being part of multiple youth theatres and school productions, and several amateur dramatics groups in Sheffield, Michael has performed up and down the UK including at the Edinburgh Festival and at Sheffield Lyceum Theatre.


Michael has nearly 10 years’ experience in events management and has always specialised in events in the arts and entertainment industry, particularly in co-founding a 3 day Theatre Festival “Thestival” in 2014.


Michael has worked on and off-stage as a performer in both musicals and straight plays including credits as producer, choreographer, director for multiple theatre groups. Michael is also the writer of several one-act plays including Angels, Firsts, and Batman: A Spoof Musical.


Michael holds a BA Public Relations and Media from Sheffield Hallam University and sits on Butter side Up’s committee as a Co-Founder and Trustee, as well as Marketing Manager, strategising the public messages and online content.

Lucy Smith-Jones

Lucy has always been intrigued by theatre, but only became actively involved upon joining HSU Theatre society, where she met co-founders Hudson & Cleary.  During her time in the society she produced and acted in a number of productions, and directed comedy showcases and a production of Green Days American Idiot.  

She graduated from Sheffield Hallam with a degree in Film and Media Production in 2015.  After which she founded her production company Rëdonya Media, specialising in short internet content and live events, and worked as a visual artist with the Yorkshire Artists Collective. 


Having worked in cinema exhibition in Sheffield for three years, working with The Showroom Cinema and Celluloid Screams Horror Festival, she now lives in Brighton completing an MA in Cultural Industries Management at the University of Sussex.
